My god, you need a rest, man.
Some fascinating-sounding stuff here. Whoever came up with the idea of putting John dos Passos’ USA on vinyl was surely insane. But I want to hear James Mason reading Browning and Nabokov and Mr Spock reading Bradbury. But Charlton Heston reading The Old Man & the Sea? The thought makes me nauseous…

Crazy label basically. The other spoken-word labels were either fly-by-night (the beatnik/experimental poetry labels) or largely conservative (Argo and HMV’s literary line). Caedmon mixed what I assume are solid sellers in the Childrens series with bizarre literary stuff. I wonder if theres anyone still around that I could speak to about the label…
Comment by Beezer B 23.02.08 @ 4:07 pmThat’s a great cover. I think that spoken word will have a future as we all have less and less time to commit to the written word.
Your plunging of the world of vinyl makes me a)wish I had the bug and b)glad I don’t have the bug.
Any idea how to find out what year any given album was released? I’m trying to catalog my collection, and having trouble finding dates on a lot of older albums.
Comment by Ringo 08.08.08 @ 3:51 pmNo. Most US/Candadian release LPs prior to 68 don’t bare the release date. With some countries they included little codes that you could use to determine when they were released. With Caedmon you can only really work it out by a record’s proximity in the catalog to one that you do know the date for. I haven’t tried. If I find a list I’ll update this one. It might be worth emailing Harper but I should imagine anything they had was shredded years ago.
Comment by Beezer B 08.08.08 @ 10:33 pmI was hoping to find Steven Vincent Benet’s recording of “Mountain Whippoorwill” in this list…does anyone know where I might find it from a 60′s record that I believe was Caedmon or a Scott Foresman Literature series record. This list is incredible.
