Tomorrow is the final of the BBC’s The One and Only. It’s Pop Idol for tribute acts. A really long episode of Stars In Their Eyes.
It’s pretty lame as you’d imagine but for one thing… They have a ginger white dude blacked-up as Lionel Richie (!!!) and he’s great.
Watch this dude talking, normally, as him, and then watch him singing as Lionel.

I think I like him better than Lionel. If he performed original songs (still with the prosthetic nose of course) I think he could be the biggest star in the world or something. He’d be like a reverse Michael Jackson but a little bit Al Jolson.
Anyways if you don’t want to watch the show ever (fair enough) you can find all Moni Tivony’s (what a name!) performances on the BBC youtube channel.

I just can’t believe that twatty Robbie Williams impersonator gets to be in the final with him – that dude is terrible, oh and so is the very very orange Tom Jones. Bad.

Of course this isn’t without president as there was a “blacked-up”
winner of the Stars in Their Eyes Grand Final back in 1991. He was called Bernard Wenton and performed as Nat King Cole. I found this shocking at the time, but in this strange way the world turns I think the equivalent IS sort of fine today and so do the BBC obviously. Sadly Bernard Wenton died of lung cancer in 2006 but here his website which still rather tragically haunts the internet:

I think Moni as Lionel Richie was the best act of the contest, he did so much, came in as the one who needed the biggest transformation.
When I listened to him sing, he was exactly lIke Lionel Richie, even Lionel sent him a message, how amazing was he!
Moni is going places, and the BBC/Endemol have a diamond on their hands.
This shows you what talent there is in the UK, do not let him slip thru the net, someone needs to get him signed up, and listen to his music, he has a myspace page and he is amazing

This lad has got what it takes to make a substantial singing career. Through his brilliant performance as Lionel Richie, he has shown the viewing public his fantastic talent.
He needs a good agent to put him on the right track. Let’s hear more of Moni Tivony!

I miss that kind of music..you know soul music the kind that get thru to ya..
Moni you are fantastic, your Mum and Nan seem like really special fun people…would love to meet you all, where do I buy tickets for your show????
